GoEco offers a popular Whale Shark and Marine Conservation program based in Praia do Tofo, a stunning beach town in Inhambane Province. This project places volunteers at the heart of ocean research. You’ll join marine biologists on scuba dives and “ocean safaris,” helping to monitor unique marine species like the majestic whale shark. In fact, southern Mozambique is a global hotspot for whale sharks, but their numbers have declined in recent years, making conservation work vital. 

As a GoEco volunteer, your tasks might include underwater data collection, photographing marine life, and logging sightings of whale sharks, dolphins, or sea turtles. The impact of this work is significant – the data you collect contributes to protecting endangered species and preserving the delicate coral reef ecosystems. 

Volunteers live in a beachside shared volunteer chalet on the sand and can expect plenty of beach time when not working. GoEco’s program typically runs for a minimum of 2 weeks, and you’ll need to be a strong swimmer (with PADI dive certification if joining short-term).

GVI (Global Vision International)

GVI’s Dolphin, Turtle, Shark, and Ray Research project is based on Benguerra Island in Bazaruto National Park – an area famous for vibrant coral reefs and rare marine creatures like dugongs. 

As a volunteer with GVI, you become part of a research team studying Mozambique’s oldest marine protected area, home to the last viable population of dugongs in East Africa. Your day-to-day work could involve marine debris clean-ups, wildlife mapping, identifying fish and coral species, and even lab work analyzing samples. Visa Requirements

Mozambique offers an electronic visa (eVisa) system for added convenience. The eVisa requires filling out an application form and uploading documents like your passport scan and a passport photo, then paying the fee online. Processing can take a couple of weeks, so apply early if you choose this route. Once approved, you’ll receive an approval that you present upon arrival in Mozambique.

For volunteers planning to stay longer than 30 days or to exit and re-enter (perhaps to visit neighboring South Africa or Eswatini on weekends), consider a multiple-entry visa or arrange an extension. 

Health & Safety
