Director of Partnerships

Sarah has worked in the volunteer travel industry since 2004. She supports all of our partners, and shares stories, trends, and advice for travelers who want to volunteer, intern, or teach abroad.

Agape Volunteers specializes in volunteering, community development and conservation, and adventure travel throughout Africa. They support a variety of initiatives in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, and South Africa by placing travelers on meaningful, low-cost programs ranging from medical volunteering, teaching at public schools, HIV prevention and outreach, and more.

Affordable volunteer abroad opportunities

Agape Volunteers is a registered UK charity with volunteer programs in Africa starting from only £510. All participants are covered by the Agape Volunteers’ comprehensive travel insurance at no extra cost, and there are zero registration and administration fees – a rare find among volunteer abroad organizations.

Between insurance, housing and meals, airport transfers, orientation, support, and even side trips and tours, Agape Volunteers is one of the most affordable programs that you can be a part of if you want to volunteer in Africa.

Safety and responsibility

Agape Volunteers is supported by its headquarters in the UK, as well as its program offices throughout Africa. Many of the organization’s staff members were volunteers themselves, and their key UK team members have even spent many months visiting and working on overseas projects, giving them a strong background in volunteer travel. Experts are on-hand to answer questions about projects as you choose the right one for your interests and background, and once you’re in-country, field staff will work with you to make sure you’re able to safely contribute to meaningful, impactful programs.

To make sure their volunteer abroad programs are sustainable and responsible, Agape Volunteers asks themselves the following questions:

  1. Is there a genuine need for this project?
  2. Do we have access to the right sort of volunteers to actually make a difference?
  3. Can we guarantee the safety of our volunteers and the members of the community?

High-impact programs

High-impact volunteer abroad programs are integral to Agape Volunteers’ success, and you can be part of the change whether you’re staying one week, a month, or even for a full gap year.

Teaching and childcare are some of Agape Volunteers’ most popular programs, especially in Ghana and Kenya. And if you are looking to pursue a career in medical care or healthcare, Agape Volunteers offers amazing programs where you can assist with HIV prevention as well as medical outreach in Kenya. Or if you want to conserve our planet’s endangered animals, the conservation experience in South Africa could be right up your alley.

It's a scam.

I did the project in South Africa, and discovered that Agape is actually just an agency for the project there. This isn't mentioned ANYWHERE on their website or in the PDF they provide with the description of the project. They present it as THEIR project. I ended up paying them 1880 pounds as opposed to the 1146 pounds I would have paid had I booked directly with the project, which is called Leo Africa. Yes, I did get travel insurance as part of the price, but three weeks of travel insurance doesn't cost 734 pounds.

You'd think with all the extra money I paid them, they'd provide top service, but no. The coordinator had me book a plane ticket BEFORE he had confirmed with the project that there was space for me, which meant I then had to go through the hassle of rebooking the tickets.

What really gets me is that they present themselves as a charity - an altruistic organization that was set up to provide good opportunities for volunteering.

Just to be clear, my experience at Leo Africa was really good, and I can recommend it. Just do yourself the favour of booking directly with Leo Africa, because you will save a ton of money:

I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience with Agape Volunteers. They were so supportive and made me feel at ease about traveling to a foreign country. I learned so many things, met so many people, and had the time of my life. I volunteered with children while I was there and they were the sweetest kids I have ever met. I can’t wait to go on another trip with them!

This was such a great experience. I have been wanting to do something like this for a while but was a bit timid to book it. Agape Volunteers really helped me on the journey and made me feel that I had a support system. For me being with the children was the most rewarding thing. Those kids are truly incredible and I will always remember them. I am so glad I went on this trip. Anyone who is on the fence, I can’t recommend it enough.

All I can say is wow! This really was an experience I will remember forever. I genuinely felt that Agape Volunteers was there every step of the way to guide and encourage me. The people I met, especially the children opened my eyes to so many different styles of life. I feel like I am a better person after going on this trip. I look forward to the day when I can go back and volunteer again. Going on this trip gave me a new passion for helping others and I am so eager to keep doing as much as I can. The kids in Ghana were wonderful! The other volunteers and I will remain friends for life, and I will keep the memories I made close in my heart for years to come. If you are looking to give back and have a one in a lifetime adventure, I totally recommend!
