GoEco Program Review: Dave P, Wildlife Sanctuary, South Africa

Taking this volunteer trip to the Wildlife Sanctuary project was something I had wanted to do for several years… Literally after one day of volunteering, I was already regretting only having two weeks to stay. Every day was amazing and full of incredible experiences and new people.

The days flew by as we were so busy working on the farm, hanging out and making new friends, and learning about the wildlife in a very hands on manner. The staff is very helpful, friendly, and seem just as excited to be there as the volunteers. As mind-blowing as the actual project [was], the people I met were similarly incredible. It’s crazy that in just a few weeks you can develop friendships that seem like you’ve had for years. Leaving was very emotional, but still, I can’t recommend this trip enough to anyone who is considering it or may be on the fence, seriously, do it.

Having just returned home, I already miss everything that filled my days for those two weeks in South Africa. I find myself constantly looking back at photos and in the back of my mind planning a return visit as soon as possible.

Maximo Nivel Program Review: Lois M

I highly recommend volunteering with Maximo. This was my 1st volunteering abroad and it definitely will not be the last. Prior to arriving in Guatemala I did have some concerns about safety, traveling around Antigua + to the volunteer location. All my concerns were completely alleviated by Maximo staff. Beginning with the emails before arrival to orientation, to the frequent check-ins with the staff during the week. I knew I was in good hands. Kevin escorted me to my volunteer location on the first day and showed me how to navigate the “chicken buses”. He was great! My only regret is that I am not staying longer. One week was not enough. If you are considering volunteering, JUST DO IT!!

GVI Program Review: Maryanne Wood, Gibbon Conservation Volunteering in Thailand

My confidence in the young people of this planet has increased 100 fold as a result of my time in Huay Pakoot. It was a pleasure to get to know all the people both on and off base. Jonny is well thought off by the staff and villagers. He has a great sense of humor. Jacob was wonderful, he really loves the Gibbons, has a wealth of knowledge, and on my last day we saw them. It was unforgettable! As an older person, I was worried about fitting in which turned out to be no worry at all. All the volunteers, staff and locals treated me with kindness thus age never seemed relevant.

Most of all I discovered that the young people of today are really changing the world for the better. They are eager to learn and happy to share. The world we all love is indeed in good hands. Of course the elephants are the true stars of the show. Seeing them up close was the thrill of my life. Way to go GVI, you are making a big difference in the wilds of Thailand!!
